The campground is approximately 5 miles from Rocky Point and approximately 25 miles from Klamath Falls, Oregon.
The campground is in a Ponderosa pine forest but borders the Odessa Creek marsh. The edge is a transition from marsh to willow/aspen to Ponderosa pine forest providing for an interesting variety of bird species.
Odessa Creek campground is a small (4 - 7 camp sites) Forest Service campground located along Odessa Creek, near where the creek enters Upper Klamath Lake. There are opportunities to explore the nearby marsh via canoe. The Klamath Bird Observatory has been operating an intensive bird monitoring station here during the breeding and fall migration seasons since 1997.
The campground provides a great opportunity for birders to see woodpeckers. In the pine forest, the usual complement of forest species can be found including Hairy, Downy, Pileated and White-headed Woodpeckers, Northern Flicker, Western Wood-Peewee, Mountain Chickadee, all three western species of nuthatches, Brown Creeper, Red Crossbill, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and many more. Along the edge between the forest and the marsh look for Cassin's and Warbling Vireos, Williamson's and Red-naped Sapsuckers, House Wren, Song Sparrow and Yellow Warbler. The marsh area is very dense and foot access is poor. The best access to the marsh is by canoe. In the marsh, you may see or hear Sora, Virginia Rail, American and Least Bitterns, and Black-crowned Night-Heron.
Off Highway 140, take Forest Service Rd.3639 to the Odessa Creek Campground. Signs are posted on the highway to let travelers know where to turn. The campground is approximately 5 miles from Rocky Point. GPS: 122° 3' 6.93" W, 42° 25' 49.49" N.
